Starting up a business requires some thought. One of the first things that I learned about deciding on a business was that the business owner needed to know they were filling a need. There is one thing for certain. The elderly population and the medical industry are currently growing exponentially. It is simple math that if you are filling a need for a large population that it would equate to huge profits for the business owner. This should peak prospective any entrepreneur’s interest.

So what kinds of services would the elderly require? Well they need transportation. In the medical industry it is referred to as the Non-EmergencyMedical Transportation Industry (NEMT) and it is a business that is currently extremely lucrative and very much in demand. Seriously this industry is literally growing by the day.

Sometimes the NEMT business is called an ambulette service. It involves the transportation of people in need of ambulatory assistance.

The NEMT business establishment transports people to and from appointments, in and out of hospitals, or to various residential activities.

Another thing to consider is whether a market is already saturated. In the case of the NEMT business this is not the case. Think of any area that I could have introduced you to today and I would be willing to venture a bet that most of you did not even come close to thinking this was the kind of business that I was going to introduce you to today. This is true of most anyone.  Most people are too busy thinking about some easy get-rich-quick scheme or some no money down idea. Then they dream of great wealth! Let’s be honest. Money does not usually come without some serious planning, some know-how and some real investment of your time.

There will be some investment of course. You will need at least one vehicle that can accommodate the transferring of someone who most likely needs a wheel chair. The vehicle will need a lift installed. You will need a driver who is willing and able to assist someone with a disability and you will need insurance. However, once this investment is made, you will not need to buy, store, ship or sell. You will of course need to keep the vehicle in good working condition. Thus, you should ensure that you know of a good and fair mechanic if you are purchasing a used vehicle without any type of warranty.

Customers will be seeking your services. Thus, you will not need to invest a lot in advertisement. A simple listing in the phone book yellow pages should suffice. There are free services that offer advertisement such as Craigslist and other online listing services.

You will not need to have a building to operate out of until you have multiple service vehicles. This business may begin easily in a home office situation.

This is a very profitable area and one that many NEMT business owners cater to exclusively due to the high profitability in this area.

Connect with your local hospitals. They will contact you readily when they require transportation for their emergency room discharges, general discharges or for their patients requiring transportation from one facility to the next.

Let’s not forget our nursing facilities who may become a mainstay for your organization. There are medical centers such as dialysis centers and other similar medical groups that have patients requiring regular transportation. The key word here is regular.

There are young people who require transportation to school or other scheduled destinations. School districts may seek you out or you may contact them and offer your services.

Keep in mind that you do not need to have any special skills. You may want to take some CPR training or require that your employees do so just out of courtesy and as a selling point for your agency.

There are so many elderly people who have limited family to care for them and need your service day in and day out. This is a virtual open market at present.

One thing I have learned is that the best way to learn is from someone who has already done something and is successful at it.
